NCBBA’s Operation Beach Respect and Adopt

On Saturday, June 17, the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association (NCBBA) will once again hold its Operation Beach Respect and Adopt-A-Highway clean-ups, which are recurring seasonal events that have been organized by the NCBBA for 39 years.

NCBBA's signature event, with the support of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, will return for its summer beach cleanup on June 17.

NCBBA volunteer members will be at the entrance of all open off-road vehicle (ORV) ramps in the morning hours from ramps #2 through #55, including ramp #70 on Ocracoke Island.

Beachgoers can expect to be greeted by NCBBA volunteers as they drive up to their favorite beach access ramp on Saturday, as NCBBA members will be stationed at each ramp to hand out packets of information on the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Included in the packet is a large plastic garbage bag. "We ask you to walk the beach in the outlying area where you park for the day and fill it with any trash or debris found," stated Tom Brueckner, NCBBA Director, in a press release. "Return your collection to the National Park Service trash cans at the ramp entrance as you leave."

Adopt-A-Highway volunteers will meet at the ORV ramp #4 parking lot at 7:30 a.m. on June 17. Director Carol Mowers will meet all volunteers and hand out grabbers, reflection vests, gloves, and garbage bags, and give out route location assignments. Trash roadside pick-up is along a three-mile stretch of N.C. Highway 12 from the Marc Basnight Bridge to a half mile north of Coquina Beach ramp #2. Children between ages 12-17 accompanied by a parent are allowed to participate, and it's a great way to get community service credit for school.
