Mayor Evans unveils reusable Public Market shopping bags featuring local artists | City of Rochester, New York

Mayor Malik D. Evans today unveiled the new reusable City of Rochester Public Market shopping bags that feature the work of local artists.

“These bags are more than just a way to carry groceries; they represent our community’s spirit and creativity,” said Mayor Evans. “The funds raised through this initiative will not only help sustain local artists but also provide food for families in need. I am delighted to see this initiative come to fruition and look forward to continuing our efforts to promote sustainability and support Rochester’s artists.”

The bags feature two works, a floral artwork by Michael Tomb and Marcia Zach of Studio Michaelino on one side; and a painting by Nancy Wiley that captures the Market’s lively atmosphere on the other. Both designs reflect Rochester’s rich artistic community and commitment to environmental stewardship. Sales for the bags begin Sunday, Sept. 15 at Artist Row, the annual juried art show at the Market that benefits the Friends of the Public Market. The bags will be available for sale at the Market during regular Market days.

The reusable bags are made from 100 percent recycled plastic water bottles and are priced at $6 each. For each bag sold, $4 will go towards the Friends of the Public Market, contributing to the Market Token Program for SNAP recipients, $2 will go to the artists.

The Market Token Program provides wooden tokens to SNAP recipients, allowing them to purchase fresh food from more than 100 participating vendors. The Market Token Program Center is located behind the Market Office in a re-purposed shipping container and is open year-round from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

The City plans to make this an annual tradition, featuring new designs by different artists each year, furthering its commitment to both environmental sustainability and the local art community.
